“The Chinese authorities are deeply concerned about this trend in the United States, which is often accompanied by increasing pressure on academics working on human rights issues in the US,” Ms Wang, who is now attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst, said in a statement.
The New York Times reports that China is trying to influence the American education system by having Ms Wang take a course in China which “involves studying Chinese language and culture”.
Ms Wang, who studied in the US with the help of a US family member, was not permitted to return to her Beijing home amid a recent spate of high school students in the US and Canada being detained at China’s border.
In November, five American citizens who were jailed at China’s Bailiwick of Tsinghua University in Beijing were released. The others were students from the same university in the US.
In 2016, the State Department’s Consular Affairs posted a list of recommended schools for US citizens in China.
